Coming from an organization that has spent two decades developing youth programming specifically for boys (The Council for Boys and Young Men) and providing training and curriculum to adult program facilitators, I'm grateful to see the language in these bills to specifically call in more men to the classroom and youth-services. Program facilitators tell us all the time how much it matters when a boy has even one adult man showing up consistently for him. Legislation alone isn't going to solve the issue of needing more men to step into the classroom and mentorship roles, but it tells programs and systems that hiring and training men for this type of work is worth prioritizing. Three cheers!
In ancient days, when I was young, young men came back from WWII and got teacher’s college degrees on the GI bill. They taught every grade and subject when I went to high school. They were good role models. They had cars and homes and kids. Let’s bring back a time when the government helps returning vets get the care and education they need. Let’s make teacher’s salaries enough to pay for a decent home.
This is LONG overdue. Finally some men are taking real action to deal with the issues men and boys face.
The educational systems in western countries are totally gynocentric in their approach to teaching and in the management of the education system. It is also obvious that feminism's ideology has infiltrated all aspects of it as well.
Boys need exercise as much as book learning but the system is set up to only facilitate how girls can effectively function in a learning environment. As well, there is a complete and utter lack of male role models in the entire western education system. Boys are faced with a structure that is overwhelmingly dominated by female power, influence and attitudes.
I run group based mentoring programs for boys at KB Foundation in Philadelphia, and the shortage this names is the one I live every week. It is also why we do not run a one to one matching model. When a boy has to wait for a program to find him his one man, the waitlist is the program.
In a group model the math works differently. If we have a field trip for twenty boys, we need five mentors, and we are asking a pool of over one hundred volunteer men to produce those five. We are not asking five men to be five men, every time, forever. That removes the single hardest part of being a mentor, which is the pressure to show up constantly or feel like you failed a kid. The boys get access to every mentor who walks in, the mentors get each other, and no one man carries a boy's whole experience on his own back.
More men need to show up, and the diagnosis here is right. But how we structure their showing up matters just as much as how many come. We have found that men say yes to a hundred to get five far more easily than five to get five.
I love where this is going and what it could do for young boys (and girls) when the right male teacher is in there. But, like any initiative, there should be a high standard for who we let teach classes to the next generation. Also, if we want to see more men enter the profession who not only have the potential to be excellent teachers but also want to be one, then the economics need to be more attractive. That's the part I don't think we harp on enough with these discussions, even though I agree on the idea and premise. One of my best friends was a middle school math teacher and the TN Teacher of the Year 2 years in a row, but could barely make it by each month. He ultimately decided to leave the profession 4 years ago, even though he loved the work, because he never saw much more than a $2 raise. It's hard to raise a family and start a life when that is the case.
This is amazing. And dovetails nicely with a presentation Curtis from MEN and I did yesterday at the NM Legislature's Interim Education Study committee on recruiting more male teachers. You can see that portion of the testimony at the 1:15 mark in this link. Wish we would have had this yesterday... but we'll sure as hell use it moving forward.
I wouldn't have respected that alleged tough guy teacher (though ABSOLUTELY many,many more positive male role models are needed to guide lads to true manhood),because my father was a boxer and lumberjack,in short,the epitome of a tough guy. He gently (though occasionally sternly) shepherded me towards manhood, because he know I was a cover boy handsome,Mensa-level brainy youngster who required a soft touch rather than a hard hand.
And we need more Asians, Blacks, and Hispanics in those classrooms. But we were ever so grateful for the men our sons had in their early schooling years. Red, Yellow, Black and White, boys and girls. Gotta love them all.
